The Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) launched an eviction drive on Monday to remove illegal establishments with a view to addressing the waterlogging problem in the capital.

A DNCC team, led by Executive Magistrate Mohammad Sajid Anwar, conducted the drive and dismantled 150 illegal makeshift structures in the city's Uttara Sector-4 area, said its Public Relations Officer ASM Mamun.

The illegal structures were erected alongside the drain stretching from Kosaibari of Shaista Khan Avenue to Switch Gate.

Nearly 25,000 square feet area was freed from illegal occupation during the drive that started at 10:00am and continued till 2:30pm, Mamun said.

On March 12, new DNCC Mayor Md Atiqul Islam visited the area and asked the illegal occupants to remove the makeshift structures within two days on their own so that the city dwellers can get rid of waterlogging problems during the rainy season.

This is the first such drive of DNCC since Atiqul took over as the mayor. The drive will continue, Mamun added.
