Drug peddler dies in N'ganj 'gunfight'

NARAYANGANJ, Sept 11 (UNB): An alleged drug peddler was killed in a reported gunfight with members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) at Mridhakandi in Sonargaon Upazila on Wednesday.

The deceased was identified as Md Hridoy alias Gittu Hridoy, 30, son of late Sabuj Mia of Habibpur in the upazila.

ASP Jasim Uddin of RAB-11, said that a team of the elite force challenged a private car for its suspicious movement which was crossing a check-post in Changkakandi on the Dhaka-Chattogram Highway.

But Hridoy who was driving the car without slowing down the vehicle fired gunshots on the RAB members while the law enforcers also retaliated that left Hridoy bullet injured.

Later, he was taken to hospital where doctors declared him dead, the official added. The team also recovered a foreign made pistol, two rounds of bullets and 500 pieces of contraband Yaba pills from the spot.

Hridoy was accused in 17 different cases including murder, robbery, snatching filed with Sonargaon Police Station, the ASP said.
