DSCC, DNCC take special steps to control dengue, chikungunya

FE Report | July 16, 2019 00:00:00

A day after the High Court order, the two Dhaka city corporations finally came up with some special measures to control spread of dengue, chikungunya and other similar diseases in the capital.

The High Court on Sunday asked the two city corporations to take effective steps within 24 hours to destroy Aedes mosquitoes for preventing spread of dengue and chikungunya diseases.

The court also asked the two city corporations and other respondents to inform the court about the steps taken to control dengue and chikungunya by July 22.

Following the court instruction, Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) opened a hotline through which the affected individuals will be treated free of cost. DSCC Mayor Mohammad Sayeed Khokon informed this while speaking at the inauguration of the special primary healthcare service programme at the DSCC auditorium.

The DSCC mayor requested the city dwellers to call the hotline (09611000999) if anyone of their family is affected with dengue or chikungunya fever.

He said their medical team will rush to the homes of the affected individuals and provide healthcare services and medicines free of cost until their recovery.

"Our team will assist the patients in getting admitted in the hospitals if necessary," the mayor said.

To ensure the service, Mr Khokon said they have already formed 67 medical teams and medicare activists who will be available at 476 educational, social and cultural institutions in the city.

"Don't worry, just make a call, our team will be at your (city dweller's) service," he said. According to Mr Khokon, anti-mosquito drives have been intensified since July 01 in the capital.

On the other hand, Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) is going to launch a central call centre from where the city dwellers will receive necessary suggestions to get proper treatment for mosquito-borne diseases.

Talking to the FE, DNCC chief health officer Brig Gen Md Momimur Rahman Mamun said they are focusing more on preventive measures.

"We're working to open a central call center through which the city dwellers will know what needs to be done when someone has a fever," he said.

The DNCC chief health officer said they also planned to strengthen the local primary healthcare centre by supplying effective kits to ensure proper diagnosis of dengue or chikungunya fever.

"We're trying hard to start the healthcare centre by Sunday next," he added.

The DNCC also formed a 10-member technical committee for selection, test, purchase and monitoring of the effectiveness of pesticides to control mosquitoes. DNCC mayor Atiqul Islam will head the committee while the chief health officer will act as the member secretary.

The committee was formed during a meeting of the 'Introduction of more effective pesticides in mosquito-control programme' at DNCC Nagar Bhaban on Monday.
