Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) Mayor Sayeed Khokon on Wednesday asked the Taskforce officials not to harass any owners in the name of relocating chemical warehouses from the residential areas of Old Dhaka.

"The ongoing drive against chemical warehouses will continue. Harassment of any businessmen in the name of the crackdown will not be allowed," he warned at a discussion titled 'Problems and Prospects of Chemical Warehouses in Old Dhaka' at Nagar Bhaban.

He said there will be no drive except for against 29 kinds of chemicals and flammable items.

He urged the Taskforce members to stay cautious during the drive and requested the owners of the chemical units to cooperate with the government.

The Mayor said the government will relocate all the chemical warehouses as part of a plan under which a chemical palli (village) will be built on 29 bighas of land in Sirajdikhan upazila of Munshiganj district within next six months.

The plan layout will be completed within next two weeks.

The city father said he had asked the department of explosives to submit a report within 24 hours on whether plastic ball (small) is considered to be a flammable item.

"If plastic ball, as per report, is proved to be a flammable item, then we will have nothing to do…or if it is not proved to be a flammable item then the drive will continue against 29 types of chemicals only," he said.

He called upon the officials of the department of fire service and civil defense and the department of explosives to find out problems if there were any apart from chemicals.
