DU set to celebrate Pahela Boishakh

The Dhaka University (DU) authorities have chalked out various programmes on the occasion of Pahela Boishakh, the first day of Bangla calendar, to be celebrated on April 14.

A meeting on the celebration of Pahela Boishakh was held on Sunday with DU Vice-chancellor (VC) Prof Dr Md Akhtaruzzaman in the chair.

Pro-VC (administration) Prof Dr Muhammad Samad, Treasurer Prof Dr Kamal Uddin, Registrar Md Enamuzzaman, faculty deans, hall provosts, senate and syndicate members and officials were present in the meeting.

On the occasion of Bangla New Year, Fine Arts Faculty will bring out traditional 'Mangal Shobhajatra' from its premises in the morning, said a press release on Sunday.

The university authorities have already taken foolproof security measures to celebrate Pahela Boishakh on the campus in a peaceful manner.

They have also put restrictions on wearing of masks and carrying bags on the campus. But the students will be allowed to wear masks made by Fine Arts Faculty.

People won't be allowed to blow 'bhubhujela' on the day and hawkers won't be allowed to sell these on the campus, the release said.

Closed-circuit television cameras will be set up on the day and the authorities asked the police to take necessary measures to ensure the security of revellers.

The press release also said organisers must wrap up all the programmes on the DU campus by 5:00 pm.

No vehicles other than those carrying DU stickers will be allowed at the university from 7:00 pm on April 13 while all kinds of vehicular movement will remain suspended on the campus on April 14. Outsiders won't be allowed to stay on the campus after 5:00 pm on April 14.

The university community members will be allowed to go through the gates adjacent to Nilkhet and Palashi crossings only by their own vehicles.

Public toilets will be set up at Haji Muhammad Muhsin Hall playground, Teacher-Student Centre (TSC), Doel Chattar and Curzon Hall areas, the release added.
