A group of students of Dhaka University (DU) staged a demonstration by blocking Shahbag intersection in the city on Wednesday to press for their four-point demand, including cancellation of seven colleges' affiliation with the university.

Around 500 students brought out a procession under the banner of general students from the Raju Sculpture adjacent to Teacher-Student Center (TSC) at 11:30am.

They put up barricade at Shahbagh intersection till 2pm and announced to stage a sit-in at TSC today (on Thursday) at 11:30am in support of their demand.

The students also announced to boycott all classes and examinations until their demands were met. Ahmed Shakil, spokesman of the protesters, said, "We have called again a sit-in porgramme at TSC at 11:30am tomorrow (Thursday) and we will boycott all classes and examinations until our demands are met. It is the demand of all DU students."

Vehicular movement from New Market to Matshya Bhaban and Shahbagh to Farmgate remained suspended due to the blockade, causing immense suffering to the commuters.

Rownok Islam, a DU student said, "This affiliation has created many problems for both the DU and the seven colleges. He authorities can't publish results in due time and for this many students are losing two academic years. They can't handle us properly, how could they handle seven colleges!"

Apart from cancelling the affiliation of seven colleges, the agitated students also demanded automation of the university's administrative and academic activities, controlling outsider vehicles' movement inside the university campus and publishing results within two months of the exams.
