CHATTOGRAM, Feb 02: About 200 illegal structures along the banks of the Karnaphuli River have been identified for eviction by the district administration.

The district administration will formally start demolishing illegal structures, erected by influential persons decades back, from tomorrow (Monday).

Assistant Commissioner (Land) of Patenga Circle Tahmilur Rahman said the eviction drive will start from Sadarghat.

Land Minister Saifuzzaman Chowdhury Zabed saw himself the preparations of the administration for the eviction drive at Sadarghat point this afternoon.

He was accompanied by Deputy Commissioner of Chattogram Md Ilyas Hossain and coordinator of the eviction drive Magistrate Tahmilur Rahman.

The land minister said all illegal structures will be pulled down if the owners don't remove them. "Nobody is more powerful than the government," he said when his attention was drawn to illegal structures owned by some influential persons.

"They will either remove their structures or we will demolish them," he said, adding that they (owners) need to remove these structures immediately, no question whoever he might be.

Preparation for conducting the eviction drive started from Friday morning with land measurement on the river banks from Sadarghat to Majhirghat.

Mr Tahmilur said they faced different legal obstructions in the past in their attempt to remove illegal structures. "But this time the administration has become successful."

Illegal structures were also identified with boundary walls. "In addition, we are red-marking them again which will help us remove them easily," he said.

As many as 2,500 structures on both banks of the river will be pulled down. All these structures are illegal, he added.
