FM apprehends instability if Rohingya crisis lingers

July 28, 2019 00:00:00

SYLHET, July 27 (BSS): Foreign Minister Dr AK Abdul Momen expressed fear that if the Rohingya issue lingered it had the potential to trigger regional instability.

"We don't want such a situation, we would like to see peaceful repatriation of the Rohingyas to Myanmar," he said at a programme here on Friday.

However, the foreign minister expressed the hope that the Rohingya repatriation would begin, shortly.

Bangladesh is hosting over 1.1 million forcefully displaced Rohingyas in Cox's Bazar district and most of them arrived after August 25, 2017 after a military crackdown by Myanmar, termed as "textbook example of ethnic cleansing" by the UN.

"Bangladesh has set an example of humanity in the global arena by giving shelter to more than one million Rohingyas here," he said.

The minister was addressing the correspondents' conference of a Sylhet based online news portal named sylhetview24.com.

Momen urged the media to play a more proactive role in checking rumours as well as negative campaign against Bangladesh.

The foreign minister also exchanged views with managing committees of secondary and higher secondary educational institutes under Sylhet constituency-1 at Sylhet district administration office.

During the meeting, Momen put emphasis on turning the country's huge population into skilled human resources.

"If we fail to build our students as skilled manpower, Bangladesh will bump on the development highway," he added.

He said the government will not compromise in ensuring quality education in all educational institutions.

Later, he distributed saplings among representatives of secondary educational institutions of the district.
