HC orders renewal of fitness certificates by Sept 30

The High Court (HC) ordered owners of unfit vehicles on Tuesday to renew their fitness certificates from August 01 to September 30, saying no unfit vehicles will be allowed to ply the roads after end of the timeframe, reports BSS.
An HC division bench comprising Justice Md Nazrul Islam Talukder and Justice KM Hafizul Alam passed the order as Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) filed a report in this regard.
The HC on June 24 directed BRTA to submit lists of vehicles and drivers, whose fitness certificates and driving licence haven't been renewed after expiration.
BRTA in its report Tuesday said a total of 4, 79, 320 vehicles are plying the road withs outdated fitness certificates.
"Around Tk 67.2 million (6.72 crore) was realised from the owners of unfit vehicles this year and 39,837 cases were filed in this regard.
A total of 214 vehicles have been sent to dumping and 728 drivers have been jailed," the BRTA report said.
Supreme Court lawyer advocate Syed Mamun Mahbub earlier drew the court's attention towards a report of an English daily about the free movement of unfit vehicles.
