IFRC team leader leaves B’desh after govt order

January 16, 2018 00:00:00

A team leader of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies or IFRC left Bangladesh, as ordered by the government, after she prevented officials from entering a makeshift hospital in Bandarban to see Rohingyas wounded in a fire, reports bdnews24.com.

Nuran Higgins left Bangladesh on Monday morning, a spokesperson for the IFRC told the news agency. Hinggs was the team leader of the field-based mission training and a trained nurse.

Ukhia Upazila Nirbahi Officer Md Nikaruzzaman Chowdhury said the incident took place on January 12 when four Rohingyas were killed in a fire at the Ghumdum transit camp.

The Upazila administrators along with local police officers went to see them at the makeshift hospital. But the IFRC team leader did not let them see the wounded.

The Upazila administration informed the district administration about it -- following which the foreign ministry took the decision.

A senior official at the foreign ministry said that they asked her to leave Bangladesh by Monday.
