Oman pledges continued support to help Rohingyas

A four-member delegation of Oman Charitable Organisation (OCO), led by its president Ali Ibrahim Al Shenoon, visited Rohingya refugee camps at Burmapara in Ukhia upazila of Cox's Bazar on Tuesday.

The OCO team distributed humanitarian aid among 1,000 Rohingyas who fled into Bangladesh in the backlash against inhuman torture and atrocities by Myanmar military and Buddhist extremists.

Ali Shenoon expressed the commitment that the Sultanate of Oman will continue its support to the Bangladesh government for providing Rohingya refugees with humanitarian aid until they return to their home country Myanmar.

He further disclosed the plan of the Oman government to build shelter houses for at least 1,000 Rohingya families to ensure their minimum standard of living.

The Oman delegation highly appreciated the generosity of Bangladesh government and people of Bangladesh for the support and shelter to the displaced Rohingya people in Bangladesh territory.

The delegation further reiterated the support of the Sultanate of Oman to the humanitarian cause to reduce sufferings of the Rohingya refugees until they return to their homeland safely with dignity.

Later, the team members talked to some Rohingya refugees who gathered around the Omani relief centre and listened to harrowing stories of torture and atrocities they faced in the hands of Myanmar army and extremist Buddhist monks in Rakhine.

The delegation expressed the hope that the international community would take up the issue seriously to the appropriate authorities to put pressure on Myanmar to stop such barbarities.

The Oman delegation was comprised of Maryam Bint Essa Al Zadjalia, chairperson, Dar Al Atta'a Charity, Iman Bint Mohamed Al Barwania, and Mohd. Al Maqbali.

They came to Bangladesh on March 24 and are scheduled to leave later this month.
