Police arrest driver for harassing CU female student on moving bus

Three held for killing another driver

CHATTOGRAM, Apr 13 (Agencies): Police arrested a bus driver on Friday night in a case filed for attempting to strangle a female student of Chittagong University (CU) on the moving vehicle in the port city on Thursday.

The law enforcers also seized the bus from Oxygen area, said Mohammad Mohsin, officer-in-charge of Kotwali Police Station.

Driver Biplab Debnath was arrested at 12am and the number of the seized bus is Chatto Metro-J-11-1120.

The female CU student boarded the New Market-bound bus plying on route No. 3 from Gate-1 of the university around 3 pm on Thursday.

All the passengers but the victim got down from the bus at Reazuddin Road around 4:30 pm and the bus started moving towards Station Road changing its original route.

As the girl asked the driver to stop the bus out of fear, the bus helper rushed to her and tried to strangle her with her scarf.

Desperate to save herself, the girl hit the helper with her mobile phone, rushed to the door and jumped off the moving bus.

A case was filed with Kotwali Police Station on Friday afternoon accusing the driver and helper.

In another incident, Chattogram Metropolitan Police arrested three youths from Eashan Mohazon road area of the city early Saturday allegedly for killing a driver.

The arrested are identified as Mir Hossain, Nisan, 22, a third semester student of Port City International University, hailed from Chartkill area of Noakhali district, Rabiul Hossain, Imon, 20, hailed from Sitakunda upazila and Newaz Sharif, 25, hailed from Raozan upazila of the district.

Jasim Uddin, officer-in-charge of Akbar Shah thana, said the private car carrying four youths skidded of the road in Eshan Mohazon road area around 11:30 pm on Friday while it was heading towards Uttar Kattoli Beribadh.

Local people caught the youths and gave them a good beating. Later, they recovered the body kept in the back seat of the car.

However, one of the youths managed to flee the scene.

During interrogation, they confessed that they killed car driver Nurul Goni Shimul, 22, son of Abul Kalam, hailed from Amirabad area of Sitakunda upazila, in a bid to hijack the car.

They also confessed that they were heading towards Kattoli Beribadh to dump the body of car driver in the sea, said the OC Jashim Uddin.
