Police nab two for ‘killing woman after gang-rape’ on moving bus

Police have arrested a bus driver and his assistant in connection with the alleged gang-rape and murder of a woman in Kishoreganj, reports bdnews24.com.

The woman died after being raped on board a bus operated by Swarnalata Paribahan, which was travelling from Dhaka to Katiadi upazila in Kishoreganj on Monday, said Shafiqul Islam, a local police inspector.

The victim has been identified as Shahinur Akter Tania (23). She worked as a nurse at the city's Ibn Sina Hospital, according to her family.

Tania was alone on the bus after the other passengers got off at the Gazaria upazila around 9:30 pm, police said after its initial investigation.

According to the probe report, the driver and his assistant dumped her on the road after gang-raping her. Locals subsequently rushed her to the Katiadi Upazila Health Complex, where she was declared dead by doctors on duty.

Tania was strangled with a piece of cloth, her elder brother Badal Mia claimed.

The driver and his assistant have been identified as Nuruzzaman and Lalu Mia respectively. The body of Tania was taken to Kishoreganj Sadar Hospital morgue for an autopsy, said Shafiqul.

A case is yet to be filed over the incident, he added.

Meanwhile, Inspector (Investigation) of Katiadi thana Shafiqul Islam claimed that Tania sustained injuries while getting down from the bus hurriedly and later she succumbed to her injuries.
