Public varsity teachers demand independent pay scale

Teachers of the country's public universities formed human chains at their respective universities Sunday demanding an independent pay scale and increasing their retirement age limit to 67 years from existing 65, reports UNB.

The human chains were formed as per the decision of the Federation of Bangladesh University Teachers' Association (FBUTA).

At a meeting at Dhaka University on June 28, the FBUTA decided that human chains would be formed at all public universities across the country on July 6 at 11:00 am to press for the demands.

As part of the programme, Dhaka University Teachers' Association (DUTA) formed a human chain at the foot of Aparajeya Bangla on the campus at 11:00 am.

Duta president Prof Dr Farid Uddin, its vice-president Prof Dr Imamul Hoque, joint secretary Prof Dr Ziaur Rahman and DU Syndicate member Prof Dr Aktheruzzaman, among others, participated in the human chain.

Jahangirnagar University Teachers Association (JUTA) formed a human chain in front of the Amar Ekushey premises on the campus on the day with the same demand.

Around hundreds of teachers under the banner of JUTA gathered and requested high-ups of government to pay attention to teachers' sufferings.

Prof. Farid Ahmed, the president JUTA and Prof Kamrul Ahsan, JUTA secretary,  spoke on the occasion.

BSS adds: Teachers of Chittagong University (CU) formed Sunday a human chain demanding a separate pay scale for the public university teachers.

They also demanded extension of their service period until 67 years.

They came up with the demands at a human chain formed by CU Teachers' Association (CUTA) on Chittagong Central Shahid Minar premises Sunday noon.
