RAB destroy 1,100 maunds of mangoes ripened with chemical

A mobile court of the Rapid Action Battalion destroyed on Saturday around 1100 maunds of mangoes and jailed six traders in the Mazar Road area of the city's Mirpur-1 for using harmful chemicals to ripen the fruits, reports UNB.

Executive Magistrate Sarwar Alam conducted the drive along with members of RAB-4 from 5:30 am and it continued until 4:30 pm, said second-in-command of the elite force Maj Kazi Saifuddin Ahmed.

The mangoes were not naturally matured, and chemicals were used for ripening the fruits, which are harmful to consumers' health, Maj Saifuddin said.

The magistrate sentenced the six traders to suffer different jail terms from three months to one year, he said.
