State Minister for Shipping Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury on Saturday said a special committee has made recommendations to restore discipline on roads and highways and reduce accidents, report agencies.

Mahmud was speaking to the media after visiting Krishna Roy, an assistant manager of Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Corporation, at the National Institute of Traumatology & Orthopaedic Rehabilitation (Pongu Hospital).

Krishna, 52, lost a leg when a bus mounted on a footpath and ran her over at Banglamotor. Mahmud said the accident on footpath is a matter of concern.

The State Minister said a special committee, formed to restore discipline in the transport sector, filed the recommendations on August 22 to Transport Minister Obaidul Quader.

The 15-member body, headed by former minister Shajahan Khan, made 111 recommendations - 50 urgent, 32 short-term and 29 long-term.

"If order is restored by implementing these recommendations, then untoward incidents won't occur on the roads," he said.

Assuring that best possible treatment will be given to the injured BIWTC official, he said physicians are trying their best in giving treatment to her.

"We cannot bring her (Krishna) leg back, but we will continue our efforts to help her get recovery," Khalid said.

He said Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and the Shipping Ministry are now well-informed of Krishna's treatment, while the law enforcing agencies will take steps to bring those responsible for leaving Krishna injured to justice.
