Seminar focuses on maritime good governance

A daylong international seminar on 'Maritime Good Governance Towards Sustainable Development' was held in the city on Monday to increase awareness on blue-economy, reports UNB.

Bangladesh Institute of Maritime Research and Development (BIMRAD) organised the seminar for the first time while Security Affairs Adviser to the Prime Minister Major Gen (retd) Tarique Ahmed Siddique addressed it as the chief guest.

BIMRAD Chief Patron and Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Nizamuddin Ahmed was also present in the function, among others.

Maritime experts from India, the USA, Malaysia, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh presented keynote papers in the daylong seminar.

Secretary of Maritime Affairs unit of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Bangladesh Rear Admiral Md Khurshed Alam, official Rear Admiral A S M A Awal, former Chief of Naval Staff of India Admiral RK Dhowan, Captain of the USA naval force Richard Francis Sears (retd), Cheryl Rita Kaur of Maritime Institute, Malaysia and Director of Pathfinder Foundation in Sri Lanka Admiral Professor Jayanath Colombage, PhD (retd) presented the keynote papers in the seminar.

President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Bangladesh Enterprise Institute Farooq Sobhan and Professor of International Relations Department of Dhaka University (DU) Dr Imtiaz Ahmed moderated the seminar.

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between BIMRAD, National Maritime Foundation (NMF) of India, Daniel K. Inouye Asia-Pacific Center for Security Studies (DKI APCSS) of the USA and the Pathfinder Foundation (PF) on exchanging information, technologies, trainings and cooperation in maritime sector.

Addressing the seminar, Tarique Ahmed Siddique said Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman formulated the Maritime Zones Act in 1974 realising the importance of maritime resources.
