UAE for boosting investment in Bangladesh: Envoy

June 19, 2018 00:00:00

United Arab Emirates (UAE) Ambassador in Bangladesh Saed Mohamed Al Mheiri said on Monday his country wants to increase its investment flow in Bangladesh to become one of its major foreign investors, reports UNB.

"We are the number one investor in many countries around the world and my country would like to be a major investor in Bangladesh too," said the UAE envoy while talking to reporters at a press briefing at his chancery office in the city.

The newly appointed envoy said he will work for the welfare of the people of both the countries during his tenure in Dhaka. "The relations should be win-win between Bangladesh and the United Arab Emirates and I will work to ensure it," he added.

Responding to a question, Saed said he is closely working with both the sides for reopening the UAE labour market for Bangladeshis.

"I will come to you very soon with detailed development in this regard and today don't want to go furthermore," said the envoy.

About the ongoing military operation around the Red Sea port city of Hodeidah, he said the Arab coalition also launched a major humanitarian aid operation in the war-torn area alongside the military campaign.

The diplomat said the aid operation is designed to ensure the unimpeded supply of humanitarian aid to the Yemeni people by liberating the port city from the Houthi rebels.

Saed mentioned that the military and humanitarian operations come after three years of stalemate in which the previous special Envoy of the UN was unfortunately unable to bring the Houthis back to the negotiating table.

The Arab coalition launched a major military humanitarian aid operation in western Yemen on June 14 to ensure the unimpeded supply of humanitarian aid to the Yemeni people by liberating the red Sea port city of Hodeida from the Houthi rebels.

The Ambassador said operations around Hodeida aim to alleviate the suffering of the civilian population, and to create conditions favourable to achieve a negotiated settlement by cutting off the supply of illicit arms that have fueled the insurgency.
