A Dhaka court has sentenced Asia Pacific University student Mezbaul Alam to life term in prison for the 2013 murder of Daffodil University student Setu Sarkar, reports bdnews24.com.

Dhaka Speedy Trial Tribunal-1 Judge Shahed Noor Uddin announced the verdict in the presence of the suspect on Sunday.

The 25-year-old convict was sentenced to life in prison and fined Tk 50,000 in one charge. A failure to pay the fine will be punished by an additional year of prison.

Mezbaul has been sentenced to 10 years in prison on another charged and fined Tk 25,000. A failure to pay the fine will result in an additional six months in prison.

He also received a ten-year sentence for the rape of Setu and fined Tk 30,000. A failure to pay the fine will also be penalised by an additional six months in prison.

Mezbaul will serve all the prison sentences concurrently, Court Special Prosecutor Abdullah Bhuiyan told the news agency.

However, the fines must be paid separately.

According to the case documents, on Aug 16, 2013, Mezbaul proposed an 'unusual sexual relationship' with Setu Sarkar.

Sarkar refused the advances and Mezbaul raped her before hacking her to death with a sharp weapon. When a friend of the victim, Punom Kundu, attempted to stop him he attempted to electrocute them to death.
