ACC changes lawyer to deal with HC case

ACC has changed its lawyer to treat an ongoing High Court case challenging a central bank circular, which allowed defaulters to reschedule their loans with a repayment period for 10 years and get further loans.

Barrister Hassan MS Azim who appeared in the court in this case on behalf of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) on the previous days was not present in the court on Tuesday.

He submitted a statement in the court on Monday on behalf of the ACC in favour of forming an inquiry commission to probe into the irregularities of the banking sector. But the lawyer told the FE that he felt embarrassed to operate the case on behalf of the ACC and that is why he refrained himself from operating it.

Meanwhile, advocate Khurhsid Alam Khan has been appointed by the ACC to operate this case in the High Court.

Responding to a query, Khurshid said, "We will bring some changes in the ACC statement submitted in the court."

Barrister Munirujjaman who appeared in the court on behalf of the Bangladesh Bank said ACC lawyer's statement submitted in the court is contradictory to the submission of Bangladesh Bank and finance ministry.

The ACC lawyer said, "Formation of an ad-hoc 'Banking Inquiry Commission' under Section 3 of the Commissions of Inquiry Act, 1956 will help all concerned to find out the core problems prevailing in the 'Banking and Financial Sector' at present and it will, in turn, also help the ACC to play an effective role in eradicating corruption in 'Banking and Financial Sector."
