BNP standing committee member Nazrul Islam Khan said on Wednesday that the ruling Awami League (AL) will not win in the upcoming national elections if they do not fulfill the demands made by BNP.
"The government doesn't want to fulfill our demands. The people of the country even could have realised the rationality of our demands. The reason is that if the government accepts our demands then it will not be possible for them to come to power again," he said at a discussion marking the 11th death anniversary of former vice-chancellor of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BMSSU) Dr MA Hadi at the National Press Club.
Doctors Association of Bangladesh (DAB) organised the discussion. He said the ruling party leaders know that they will not be able to come to power again unless they have their party candidates elected by the influence of power; and that is why they want to come to power by force.
"Awami League wants to come to power again by force. They (AL) know that they could not come to power again if the election is held with them out of power," he said.
The senior BNP leader said his party chairperson is now languishing in jail in a false case whereas there is no trial of those who plundered public money over the last ten years.
In the name of development budget, the government is plundering public money, he alleged. Mr Islam said the government has purchased a single piece of electronic voting machine (EVM) between Tk 0.2 million and Tk 0.25 million; whereas the price of per EVM machine costs between Tk 21,000 and Tk 22,000 in the neighbouring country India.
Manufacturing of this machine by BUET will cost only between Tk 22,000 and Tk 24,000.
"The government has purchased each piece of EVM at several hundred times price, giving a clear conception of how much money was plundered in the name of procuring the device," he said.
