BCL expels one, suspends four over attack at Madhur Canteen

The Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) on Monday expelled an activist and suspended four others of its Dhaka University (DU) unit over the incident of attack at Madhur Canteen on May 13 following announcement of its 301-member central committee.

The BCL central body has taken the decision and its president Rejwanul Hauque Chowdhury Shovon and general secretary Golam Rabbani have issued a statement to the press.

After hearing this, one of the suspended leaders, Zarin Dia, former member of the central executive council, reportedly attempted to take own life by taking sleeping pills at her residence on Monday night.

She was given treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) and taken home afterwards, Rana Hamid, former social welfare affairs secretary of the BCL, said.

Salman Sadik, a BCL activist of the DU Muktijoddha Ziaur Rahman Hall unit, was expelled for his involvement in the attack at Madhur Canteen and violating the organisation's discipline, said the statement.

Gazi Mursalin Anu, general secretary of the BCL's DU science faculty unit, Kazi Siam, member of Muktijoddha Ziaur Rahman Hall unit BCL, and its activist Sazzadul Kabir and former member of central executive council Zarin Dia have been suspended on the same charges, the statement added.
