Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) leaders who were left out of the new central committee staged a demonstration on the Dhaka University campus on Wednesday, protesting Monday's attack on them.

They formed a human chain near the Aparajeyo Bangla where about 50 leaders were present.

Speaking at the programme, the leaders strongly protested the inclusion of many controversial leaders in the new 301-member central committee of BCL.

BCL leader Nipu Islam Tonni said, "We really feel unfortunate that we, the dedicated Chhatra League leaders, were assaulted in Madhur Canteen by our own political elder and younger brothers. It is too shameful."

According to the BCL constitution, the married, the non-student, the businessman and employers cannot get any post in the committee. But its incumbent president and general secretary have given posts to the controversial leaders, sidelining many dedicated leaders and activists, claimed the BCL leaders who could not make it to the new committee.

Dhaka University Central Students' Union (DUCSU) leader BM Lipi Akhter claimed that 22 newcomers have got posts in the committee, whereas many eligible leaders were left out.

On Monday, at least 200 leaders and activists staged a demonstration on the DU campus since evening after the 301-member central committee was announced.

They also gathered at Madhur Canteen at night on that day for a press conference but the event was foiled by an attack. At least 20 BCL activists were injured in the attack.

The last national council of BCL was held on May 11-12 last year.

On July 31 last year, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina nominated Rezwanul Haque Chowdhury Shovon and Golam Rabbani as president and general secretary respectively.
