CHATTOGRAM, Sept 03: Rama Chowdhury, 82, the writer and veteran Liberation War Heroine (Birangana) died at Chattogram Medical College Hospital on Monday.

She had been suffering from old- age complications and breathed her last at around 4.30 am while undergoing treatment in the hospital.

Rama Chowdhury, a widow, fell prey to Pakistan Army during the Liberation War of 1971.

The Pak Army also killed her two sons during the War.

Her body was taken to the Central Shahid Minar in the city.

Thousands of people, students and teachers, cultural activists, political workers and leaders, professional organisations, journalists, officials of the local administration and police paid their tributes to the war heroine.

She was accorded guard of honour by a contingent of the police members in presence of dozens of senior officials and political leaders irrespective of party affiliations.

Rama Chowdhury was born on October 14, 1936. She was laid to rest beside the grave of her two sons at her Boalkhali village in Chattogram.

Leaders of different socio-cultural, political and professional bodies, and academicians and journalist leaders expressed their sorrow at her demise and prayed for salvation of the departed soul.

She wrote 18 books. She did her Honours and Masters in Bengali literature from Dhaka University.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister (PM) Sheikh Hasina on Monday expressed deep shock at the death of Rama Chowdhury, one of the Biranganas of the Liberation War who is also known as 'Mother of 71', according to UNB.

In a condolence message, the PM recalled her sacrifice and struggle for the great Liberation War.

She prayed for the peace of the departed soul and expressed sympathy to the bereaved family.
