Police have arrested four people, including son of prime suspect and ex-Awami League leader Haji Iqbal, in connection with the murder of Chattogram Jubo League (JL) leader Mohiuddin, reports bdnews24.com.

The four were arrested from a house in the capital's Khilkhet area in the early hours of Wednesday, said Chattogram Metropolitan Police Deputy Commissioner (Port Zone) Harunur Rashid.

The four were detained from the building following a tip-off, he said. Haji Iqbal's son Ali Akbar was among the detainees. Iqbal was also inside the building and he fled before police attempted to catch him.

Police have not released the names of the other detainees.

On March 26, Mohiuddin was hacked to death in the headmaster's office of Meher Afroze High School where he convened a meeting to form a committee to organise a reunion of former students, said witnesses.

After the incident, police recovered the body of Mohiuddin from the scene and was later taken to his home in the port city's Halishahar area.

He was buried in his family graveyard following funeral prayers, said the victim's brother Abu Yusuf.

A group of 15 to 20 people, led by Iqbal, hacked him to death with sharp weapons and fled the scene riding a motorbike and a microbus, the victim's family claimed citing the witnesses.

The key suspect, Iqbal, was the organising secretary of Bandar thana Awami League.

Iqbal was expelled from the party on charges of breaching discipline about eight years ago, but he still identifies himself as an Awami League leader, locals say.
