GAZIPUR, May 6 (UNB): BNP claimed that police picked up its vice chairman Abdullah Al Noman and some other leaders from near the party's Gazipur City polls mayoral candidate Hasnuddin Sarkar's residence on Sunday afternoon.

Talking to the news agency, BNP organising secretary Fazlul Haque Milon said law enforcers picked Noman and some other their party leaders and activists up as they came out of the BNP mayoral candidate's Tongi residence after holding a press conference protesting the High Court's stay order on the May-15 election.

Contacted, local police, however, declined to make any comment on the matter.

Milon said several hundred law enforcers cordoned off Sarkar's residence confining many party leaders and activists, including him, to it.

Earlier in the day, the High Court stayed the Gazipur City Corporation election scheduled to be held on May 15.

An HC bench of Justice Naima Haider and Justice Zafar Ahmed passed the order following hearing on a writ petition.

The HC also issued a rule asking the government to explain as to why the inclusion of six moujas of Dhaka district into GCC should not be declared illegal.

Chief Election Commissioner KM Nurul Huda announced the election schedule for Gazipur and Khulna city corporations on March 31.

Awami League's Jahangir Alam and BNP's Hasnuddin Sarkar are vying for the mayoral post in the polls.
