CU teacher Maidul walks out on bail

Jail authorities have released Maidul Islam, a Chittagong University teacher arrested for making derogatory remarks on the prime minister on Facebook, reports bdnews24.com.

The High Court (HC) granted bail to Maidul on October 09, but he was not immediately freed from prison as the bail document had not reached the Chattogram jail authorities sooner.

"We have released Maidul Islam from jail Tuesday morning after scrutinising his bail bond," Prasanta Kumar Banik, a senior jail superintendent, told the news agency.

"I am happy - at least for now," Maidul said freed from prison. "Many people are still in prison for expressing their thoughts. We never expect this kind of oppression from the state. It is claimed to be a country with freedom of speech, open thinking, secularism and the spirit of liberation war. No-one should be obstructed from expressing their views."
