SYLHET. Dec.19: Sylhet city mayor Ariful Haque Chowdhury has said dedicated politicians in the country could not survive as a section of businessmen and bureaucrats have cornered them in politics.
He also said young leadership is not being created in the country as elections to the student unions at public universities and colleges have remained suspended for a long time due to lack of interest in government.
The mayor made the comments while speaking at an event on 'Participation and Flourishing of Youth Leadership towards a Peaceful Election' organised by Democracy International at a hotel in Sylhet city on Tuesday.
He said common people lost their faith in politics as bad money entered politics.
There is a scope to flourish young generation to make them prepared for a better Bangladesh, he added.
City AL president Badar Uddin Ahmed Kamran, also former city mayor, said senior leaders many times misguide the young generation.
He said the student politics got polluted as non-students dominated it.
"We all should come forward to work for involving the young generation in politics to make it fair," he added.
District AL general secretary Shafiqur Rahman Chowdhury, city BNP's acting president Abdul Quaiyum, general secretary Badruzzaman Selim, district Bar Association former president EU Shahidul Islam and Sylhet Press Club ex-president Md. Iqbal Siddiquee were the panellists.
City corporation panel mayor Shahnaj Begum, district Mahila Dal vice-presidents Dr Nurunnahar Mazumder and Advocate Zohra Zesmine, city councillor Shahana Begum, also Mahila AL's organising secretary, Derai upazila parishad's vice-chairman Md Golap, city BNP vice-presidents Saleh Ahmed Khasru and Samia Begum Chowdhury, joint secretary Mahbubur Rab Chowdhury, organising secretary Abdul Ahad Khan Jamal, AL's district organising secretary Humayun Islam Kamal also spoke among others.
About a hundred district and city leaders joined the event.
