Renowned Indian cardiologist Dr Devi Shetty on Monday highly appreciated the Bangladeshi physicians who provided treatment to ailing minister and Awami League leader Obaidul Quader, reports UNB.
"The Bangladeshi doctors did an excellent job ... you can't expect more than this even in the developed countries," he said during a meeting with Prime Minister (PM) Sheikh Hasina at her office.
PM's Press Secretary Ihsanul Karim briefed reporters after the meeting.
Dr Devi Shetty apprised the PM of the latest health condition of Obaidul Qauder, road transport and bridges minister and general secretary of the ruling party.
Sheikh Hasina extended her sincere thanks to Dr Devi Shetty for coming to Bangladesh quickly responding to the call for the treatment of Obaidul Quader.
"I was eagerly waiting to hear your opinion about the treatment of Obaidul Quader," she told the cardiologist.
In response, the renowned cardiologist told the PM, "I'll come to Bangladesh whenever you call me."
The PM also talked to Dr Devi Shetty about the country's medical education.
Referring to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU), she said her government for the first time in the country established such a medical university in the country so that medical students can pursue post-graduation degrees and carry out research.
Sheikh Hasina said the work on setting up such a university in Chattogram and Rajshahi each was almost completed.
The Indian cardiologist highly lauded Bangladesh's tremendous development under the leadership of PM Sheikh Hasina.
"The socioeconomic progress of the common people of Bangladesh over the last few years is remarkable," he said.
Dr Devi Shetty suggested sending Obaidul Quader abroad for better treatment, saying local doctors have to work under tremendous pressure for treating such a celebrity.
State Minister for Foreign Affairs Md Shahriar Alam, State Minister for Health and Family Welfare Dr Murad Hasan, PM's Principal Secretary Md Nojibur Rahman and PMO Secretary Sajjadul Hassan were present on the occasion.
Obaidul Quader was taken to Singapore in the afternoon by an air ambulance after Dr Devi Shetty gave the "go-ahead" to move him after examination.
Quader's blood pressure has improved and diabetes is under control, he said at a briefing at the BSMMU where the Awami League leader was admitted on Sunday with blockages in three coronary arteries.
Dr Devi Shetty further said Quader's condition is better than Sunday but not out of danger.
