Drug peddlers must get punishment: Quader

Awami League (AL) general secretary Obaidul Quader said every drug peddler must be punished if allegations are proved against them, reports BSS.

"Even lawmaker from Cox's Bazar-4 constituency, Abdur Rahman Bodi, will not be spared if allegations against him are proved. None will be spared even if he or she is a member of Awami League or BNP...Everyone will be punished," he said.

The AL leader made the comments while talking to journalists during the inspection of the work on Nabinagar-Chandra highway in Ashulia.

"Anyone whose name is in the list of Department of Narcotics Control (DNC), will face the same consequence," Quader said.

Jhalakathi adds: Industries Minister Amir Hossain Amu said the government has taken a right decision to root out drugs from the country.

"Those who are involved with the drug dealings will not be spared. The decision taken by government and the law enforcement agencies to root out drugs from the country is right," he said.

The minister made the comments while speaking at a function after distributing stipends among the poor and meritorious students at Jhalakathi sadar upazila parishad auditorium as the chief guest.

Muslim Aid Bangladesh organised the function while Iqbal Ahmed presided it.

Deputy Commissioner of Jhalakathi M Hamidul Haque spoke on the occasion as the special guest..

The Awami League leader also warned none will be allowed to create anarchy in the country through forming political party in the name of religion.

"The people of Bangladesh are peace-loving. In the past, conspiracies were hatched to create militancy in the name of religion. But, our Prime Minister has rooted out militancy from the country putting her life at stake," he said.

The same way, the Prime Minister will free the country from the clutch of drug," he added.

During the function, Amu handed over cash-money to some 40 bright and meritorious students. Besides, he also handed over food items to some 250 poor and hapless people.

Apart from this, he handed over cheques for Tk 0.52 million to some 15 institutions and 27 individuals from his personal fund.

Meanwhile, another report from Kushtia says: An Awami League (AL) senior leader said the people of the country heaved a sigh of relief as the law enforcement agencies are taking tough actions against the drug peddlers.

"The countrymen feel relieved as the law enforcement agencies are taking tough actions against the drug peddlers...But the statements of BNP encouraged the drug peddlers." He said.

"This proves that they (BNP) does not want wellbeing of the people," he added.

Awami League joint general secretary Mahbub-ul Alam Hanif made the commnents while speaking at the inaugural function of the construction of Chowrahas Eidgaon in the district town.

"None is above the law. The government has adopted zero tolerance policy to illegal drugs," Hanif said.

AL district unit organising secretary Mehedi Hasan, education affairs secretary Raju Ahmed and AL town unit general secretary Ataur Rahman, among others, were present at the function.
