Dhaka University (DU) authorities on Saturday turned down the allegations of vote rigging and irregularities in the elections to Dhaka University Central Students' Union (Ducsu) and its hall unions, reports UNB.

No returning officer received any allegation that anyone failed to cast his/her vote or their vote was cast by anyone else in the elections, the university said in a statement.

Besides, there was no allegation that anyone was harassed during the election, it said.

The authorities said the students foiled the attempt of those who were trying to gain their political interests through creating an unstable situation across the country unleashing violence and untoward incidents on the Dhaka University campus.

The statement said along with the chief returning officer and his team, a total of 450 teachers and staff of the university were involved in the elections and they performed their duties as per the code of conduct.

"No teacher or official brought any allegation of irregularities at any stage of the election," it said.

The university also directed students to inform the authorities if they have any evidence of vote-rigging and irregularities in the elections, assuring that it will take proper actions after investigation.

Referring to the recovery of a bag full of sealed ballot papers from by a polling booth at Bangladesh-Kuwait MaitreeHall, the university described it as 'unfortunate', saying the voting was suspended there soon after the incident and a five-member committee was formed to investigate the matter.

The March-11 DUCSU polls, the first in 28 years, were marred by allegations of irregularities. All panels, except that of Awami League's student front Bangladesh Chhatra League, boycotted the elections alleging vote fraud.

Chhatra League's panel dominated the polls but its VP candidate was defeated by quota reform movement leader Nurul Haq Nur.

DU Correspondent adds: Dhaka University (DU) students withdrew their hunger strike programme on the fourth day-Friday- after an assurance from the authorities of hearing their demands and investigating the alleged irregularities in the 11 March DUCSU elections.

The students started the hunger strike at the base of Raju Sculpture adjacent to the Teacher-Student Center (TSC) on Tuesday demanding reelections and resignations of all officials involved in the DUCSU elections.,

On Friday at 11:30pm, University Pro Vice-Chancellor (Administration) Prof Dr Muhammad Samad, DU Teachers' Association (DUTA) president Prof Dr ASM Maksud Kamal and Proctor Prof Dr AKM Golam Rabbani came to the spot with newly elected DUCSU vice president (VP) Nurul Haque Nur, general secretary (GS) Golam Rabbani and assistant general secretary (AGS) Saddam Hussainto and persuaded them into calling off the strike by feeding them juice and foods.

Pro VC Samad said to the hunger strikers, "Efforts will be made to resolve all the complaints that you have. Now, please be convinced and withdraw the hunger strike."

DUTA president Maksud Kamal told them, "If you want, the university authorities will sit with you on Monday. We will listen to the allegations and in future we will try to make the electoral process more transparent."

On Friday afternoon, three protesters -Shoeb Mahmud, Meem Arafat and Al Mahmud Taha felt sick when a group of agitating students brought out a hunger march from Rajus Culpture to press home the same demands.
