Eviction drive along Ctg canals underway

CHATTOGRAM, July 22: Chattogram Development Authority (CDA) in association with Bangladesh Army is conducting an eviction drive to remove all illegal structures from the canals of Chattogram to recover their lands from illegal occupiers.

CDA and Bangladesh Army removed illegal structures along Chaktai canal on Monday as part of the drive that started on July 02.

The authorities will remove a total of 300 illegal structures from the banks of the canal during the drive.

Sources said Saiful Alam Chowdhury, special metropolitan magistrate, led the operation on Monday.

On the first day of the drive, the mobile court dismantled more than 100 illegal structures in Chaktai canal area.

The drive will continue until all 300 illegal structures are removed from the Chaktai canal.

Ahmed Mainuddin, executive engineer of CDA and director of the mega project for permanent solution to the water logging crisis in Chattogram, said, "CDA will evict all illegal establishments from the banks of the canals and recover land of 13 canals of Chattogram from grabbers' possession. The eviction drive will be conducted from morning to afternoon every day for next two months."

It may be mentioned that 8.137 acres of land of Chaktai canal has remained under illegal occupation of local influential people where they have built structures.

The team will recover all land of the canal during the drive.

Earlier, a team of the CDA conducted an eviction drive along the Rajakhali canal near Kolpolok Residential Area in the port city on July 2.

Lieutenant Colonel Shahe Ali, director of the mega project to remove water logging in Chattogram, said, "The eviction drive started on July 2 and it will continue until all illegal establishments are removed from all 13 canals. We, the Bangladesh Army, are cooperating with CDA in evicting the illegal establishments from the canals of Chattogram."

According to the sources, CDA will reclaim land of all occupied canals under the mega project involving Taka 6000 crore to solve the water-logging crisis in Chattogram permanently in association with Bangladesh Army, Chattogram City Corporation (CCC) and the law

enforcing agencies.
