Foreign Minister AH Mahmood Ali criticised on Wednesday BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia and its secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir for what he says not acknowledging the country's development under the Awami League government, reports UNB.

Referring to his recent speech delivered in a public rally in Thakurgaon district in presence of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Minister Ali said he shared about Khaleda and Fakhrul with the crowd.

He mentioned that Khaleda Zia, before landing in jail in a graft case, claimed the Padma Bridge is being built of patchwork and it will be risky to use.

"What type of remark it is? Is there no knowledgeable person in BNP? Yes, there are," he said sharing what he told the public rally.

"The Padma Bridge won't be constructed during the Awami League's rule. Even if they somehow construct the bridge, please don't get on it as there'll be huge risk," Khaleda told a discussion at the Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh (IEB).

On Mirza Fakhrul, the Foreign Minister said the BNP secretary general told the media that he does not see the development in the country when his comment was sought about Bangladesh's fulfillment of necessary conditions to come out of Least Developed Country (LDC) status.

"See, he (Fakhrul) is a man of this place. May be his eyesight is completely gone. Get him for treatment soon. Get a quality spectacle for him. He's not seeing development. Even he's not seeing Thakurgaon," Mahmood Ali said sharing what he said in the public rally.

The minister came up with the remark amid repeated questions over India's role over Rohingya issue and Teesta water-sharing deal with India.

The Foreign Minister was briefing reporters at the Foreign Ministry on the PM's upcoming Kolkata visit.

State Minister for Foreign Affairs M Shahriar Alam and Foreign Secretary M Shahidul Haque were present.
