Hearings on delimitation of constituencies begin

April 22, 2018 00:00:00

The hearings on appeals over delimitation of different parliamentary seats began on Saturday at Nirbachan Bhaban in city's Agargaon, reports BSS.

In the morning, hearings on northern districts' constituencies- Nilphamari-3, Rangpur-1 and 3 and Kurigram-4- were held while hearings on Chapainawabganj-1, Sirajganj-1 and 2, Pabna-1 and 2 and Pirojpur-1, 2 and 3 were held in the afternoon.

Chief Election Commissioner KM Nurul Huda, Election Commissioners Mahbub Talukder, Md Rafiqul Islam, Begum Kabita Khanam and Brigadier General (retd) Shahadat Hossain Chowdhury were present in the hearings.

"I objected to the Election Commission's draft gazette announcement in the hearing as I think this draft demarcation is illogical. If it is made effective, voters of my consistency will have to travel through river ways for four hours to go to their lawmaker," Ruhul Amin, MP from Kurigram-4, told newsmen after the hearings.

On the other hand, Kurigram's Chilmari upazila chairman Shawkat Ali Sarker, Bir Bikram, said the area of Kurigram-4 constituency in the draft delimitation of the commission remains same as it remained from independence to before the 10th Jatiya Sangsad election.

But the area demarcation was changed conspiratorially before the 10th parliament election, he said.
