Parliamentary standing committee on religious affairs ministry on Thursday recommended shifting the present hajj mission in Saudi Arabia from Misfalah along with launching shuttle transport service.

The committee made the recommendations to reduce the cost of pilgrimage.

Misfalah is a neighbourhood of Mecca in Makkah province in Western Saudi Arabia.

Besides, the committee suggested the ministry to take necessary steps for more publicity by the lawmakers so that increased number of pilgrims can go under the management of the government in 2020 from the present 7,000 to a staggering 40,000 to 60,000.

A total of 1,27,198 pilgrims performed hajj in 2019 of which 7,198 went under the government management. At most 10,000 pilgrims can go under the government management. The committee wants to increase this quota, sources said.

The committee also formed a four member sub-committee with committee member Nazibul Bashar Maizvandary to monitor and ensure accountability and transparency of the waqf activities.

The recommendations came at the fourth meeting of the committee at the parliament building.

Committee Chairman Hafez Ruhul Amin Madani chaired the meeting.

At present, each pilgrim has to pay an official amount of Tk 3,44,000 to perform hajj. The steps will reduce the cost by Tk 70,000.
