Khaleda eligible to run for polls, says Fakhrul

Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said on Monday party's chairperson Khaleda Zia can contest the upcoming general election.

"Khaleda Zia is still eligible to run for the election. She can participate in the polls," he told the media at the party chairperson's Gulshan office in the capital.

During a dialogue, he said, the government assured them that no cases would be filed against their party leaders and activists after the announcement of the election schedule.

"But it is a matter of great regret that new cases have been filed against our party leaders who have a fair chance of winning the parliamentary election slated for December 30."

Replying to a query, he said those who are trustworthy and loyal to the party will get party nomination for contesting the upcoming election.

On the second day on Monday, the nomination board of BNP completed interview of the aspirants vying for party tickets from Barishal and Khulna divisions.

The board completed on Sunday interview of 158 aspirants for 33 constituencies under Rangpur division while 368 aspirants gave interview for 39 constituencies under Rajshahi division.

All of them were directed to submit their nomination papers to the Election Commission.

However, BNP will finalise the list of its candidates on December 08.

BNP standing committee members Dr Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, Barrister Moudud Ahmed, Barrister Jamir Uddin Sircar, Dr Abdul Moyeen Khan, Lt Gen (retd) Mahbubur Rahman, Barrister Rafiqul Islam Mia, Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury and Gayeshwar Chandra Roy, among others, were present at the press briefing.

Meanwhile, BNP's Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi alleged that the government was using the Election Commission in their own interest.
