'Health file stuck at PM's office'

BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia's three personal physicians expressed the fear on Saturday that she can be crippled and lose her eyesight if she is not given proper treatment immediately in any specialised hospital, report agencies.

BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, however, alleged that their 'critically ill' chairperson cannot be taken to a specialised hospital for better treatment as a file in this regard remains stuck at the Prime Minister's Office.

"As far as we know, the prison authority spoke with other doctors and recommended that she [Khaleda Zia] receive treatment at a special hospital," Fakhrul said.

"We have heard that the file is with the prime minister and that she is allowing the health of the leader of the country [Khaleda Zia] to deteriorate because no decision has been made," he added.

He came up with the allegation at a press conference at BNP's Nayapaltan central office on Saturday morning.

Khaleda's three physicians also spoke at the press conference about her physical condition.

The BNP secretary general said their chairperson's health condition is gradually falling for lack of proper treatment only because of the government's delay in taking a decision to send her whether to United Hospital or Apollo Hospitals.

He recalled that current Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was taken to Square Hospital from jail for her eye problem during the 1/11 government in 2007.

The BNP leader alleged that the government is not providing Khaleda with proper treatment as part of its 'evil' motive to keep her away from politics and election.

Some medical specialists also spoke at the press conference.

"Most of her problems are in the shoulder," said neuro-medicine specialist Dr Syed Wahidur Rahman. "It hurts constantly. She also has rheumatoid arthritis in her fingers. They have swollen and hurt. Her hip bones have also eroded and put pressure on her spinal cord, so she is unable to walk."

"If there is any problem she could become very weak, even paralysed, and lose sensation in her arms and legs. Proper treatment, tests and physiotherapy are required."

"She needs a well-ventilated room and environment," said orthopaedic specialist Dr Sirajuddin Ahmed. "Her illnesses will only become worse if she is housed in such poor conditions."

"Madam is also suffering from eye problems too," said eye specialist Dr Abdul Quddus. "Her eyes are inflamed. If her corneas dry out now, it will not be possible to repair them in 15 years. She may become blind at any point."
