Left parties voice doubt about fair election

September 09, 2018 00:00:00

Communist Party of Bangladesh (CPB) President Mujahidul Islam Selim expressed his doubt, on Saturday, over holding of a free and fair election under the Awami League-run (AL) government alleging that the present government is expert in generating 'state-managed election results', reports UNB.

He also alleged that the government is planning to hold another 'faulty' election using Election Commission (EC) as its (AL's) 'helping hand'.

The CPB leader was addressing a view exchange meeting of the Left Democratic Alliance (LDA) at Maitri Auditorium in the city. LDA is a combine of eight left-leaning political parties including CPB, Bangladesh Workers' Party, and Gonosanghati Andaloan.

Selim said the left-leaning parties should be more integrated with visionary political policy to create a third power in Bangladesh politics.

Terming the situation of country's politics as 'dangerous, anarchic and critical', the CPB chief claimed, "A third strong left political power is a need of the hour to create a visible and dependable alternative for the people."

Prof Anu Mahmud, member secretary of the National Committee to Protect Oil, Gas and Mineral Resources, Power and Ports, said, "A recent survey has been published in the media which showed that AL has more than 60 per cent public support. Then why is the fear in forming a neutral non-party election time government."

Prof Mahmud along with the other leaders stressed establishing a unified political stand of left-wing parties.

The leaders reiterated their demands for the resignation of the incumbent government, dissolution of the parliament and reconstruction of the Election Commission before the announcement of the poll schedule.

On Sunday (Sep 10), they will observe 'Demand Day' to realise their four-point demand and will organise demonstration and rally in different districts and upazilas and

in the capital city.
