Media crucial to strengthen democracy, says Speaker

Jatiya Sangsad (JS) Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury said on Friday media is very important to strengthen democracy of a country, reports BSS.

"January 10 is a historic day in Bangladesh. On this day, Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman returned home," she said while inaugurating a day-long programme marking Kaler Kantha's founding anniversary at Bashundhara residential area here.

Whip of Jatiya Sangsad Iqbalur Rahim spoke on the occasion as the special guest, while Editor of Kaler Kantha Emdadul Haque Milon, President of FBCCI Shafiul Islam Mohiuddin, Ex-FBCCI president Atiqul Islam, General Secretary of National Press Club Farida Yasmin, Former Captain of Bangladesh Cricket Team Atahar Ali, Former football player Abdul Gaffar, Daily Sun Editor Enamul Haque Chowdhury and executive editor of Kaler Kantha Mostafa Kamal were present.

Speaking as the chief guest, Dr Shirin said the daily Kaler Kanth played a vital role by publishing objective news to ensure democratic practice smoothly during the last 10 years and created its own space among readers.

Expressing hope that the Kaler Kantha would play a role in highlighting Bangladesh's economy and social progress indicators, she said today's Bangladesh is 'the wonders of development' in the whole world.

The Speaker also hoped that Kaler Kantha would publish objective news with maintaining the spirit of Liberation war and speaking for people of Bangladesh.

The Speaker also greeted Kaler Kantha family by handing over a bouquet.
