Bangladesh National Awami Party (NAP) and National Democratic Party (NDP) announced leaving the 20-party alliance led by Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) on Tuesday afternoon.
Explaining reasons behind quitting the alliance, the leaders of two parties said BNP kept its allies in dark about joining Jatiya Oikya Front and future activities.
The announcement was made at a joint press conference held at a community centre in the city's Gulshan-1.
NAP chairman Jebel Rahman Ghani, NDP Chairman Khandaker Golam Mortuza and other leaders of the two parties were present at the programme.
Speaking on the occasion, Mr Ghani said the 20-party alliance had been formed under the leadership of BNP chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia.
But, with the announcement of Jatiya Oikya Front, the 20-party alliance has handed over its leadership to the initiators of the new platform, he said.
He, however, said, "The people who were behind the formation of Jatiya Oikya Front were linked to the establishment of an apolitical government after 1/11."
NAP chairman also labelled the initiators of the latest political platform the actors behind popularising 'minus two' formula.
"These people (Jatiya Oikya Front initiators) are not interested in the next election; rather they are seeking alternative ways to assume power; ... we can't take that risk by sitting beside them," he said.
Stating that NAP and NDP couldn't agree to the circumstances of the formation of Jatiya Oikya Front, he said, "Considering different political aspects, we decided to sever all ties with 20-party alliance."
He said that they (NAP and NDP) are also observing a void in the leadership of the BNP-led alliance.
Talking to the FE about future activities of the two parties, Mr Ghani said, "For the sake of politics, we maintain good relations with all political parties ... election is nearing, so, we are ready to hold discussions with any political parties or alliances."
Jatiya Oikya Front was formed on October 13 leaving Jukto Front chief AQM Badruddoza Chowdhury.
Other leaders of the newly formed Jatiya Oikya Front are -- Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JSD) president ASM Abdur Rab and Nagorik Oikya convener Mahmudur Rahman Manna.
