Police arrest nine including BNP candidate's wife, daughter

Police have arrested nine people, including BNP candidate's wife, daughter, in Satkhira, Rajshahi and Sunamganj, report agencies

In Salkhira, detectives arrested the wife and daughter of jamaat leader Gazi Nazrul Islam from the district jail premises on charge of planning sabotage on Tuesday.

The jamaat leader is contesting the 11th parliamentary election with BNP ticket from Satkhira-4 constituency,

The arrestees are Maksuda Khanam, wife of Nazrul Islam and her daughter Sharmin Sultana Khuku.

Ali Ahmed Hashemi, sub-inspector of district DB police, said police arrested Gazi Nazrul on charge of sabotage activities on December 16.

Detectives arrested Maksuda and Sharmin while they were returning home after visiting Nazrul at the jail, said Hashemi.

They were organising people for carrying out sabotage in the name of election campaign, he said.

In Rajshahi, law enforcers arrested six BNP leaders and activists from different parts of Godagari upazila in Rajshahi on Monday and Tuesday.

The arrestees are Abdus Salam Shawal, president of Godagari thana unit BNP, Majibor Rahman, president of poura unit BNP and its general secretary Anwarul Haq Chowdhury, Shamim, Mizan and Palash.

Jahangir Hossain, officer-in-charge (OC) of Godagari thana, said acting on secret information, a team of police arrested Majibor Rahman and Anarul Haq from Bankpara Golchattar area in the upazila on Tuesday noon.

Besides, another team of police arrested Abdus Salam on Monday night while returning to Godagari after attending a public rally of BNP candidate Aminul Haque from Rajshahi-1 constituency in Tanore upazila.

Police arrested three more BNP men from different parts of the upazila on Tuesday.

In Sunamganj, police arrested a leader of Jagannathpur upazila unit BNP from Sayedpur Bazar in the upazila on Monday evening over sabotage charges.

A team of police arrested Syed Mosabbir Ahmed (40), organising secretary of BNP, for planning to carryout sabotage activities ahead of the upcoming national election, said sub-inspector Lutfar Rahman of Jagannathpur thana.

Besides, he was accused in two cases, said the SI.

"We cannot expect a free and fair election if the situation persists," Mainul added.
