Pro-BNP panel wins Chittagong Bar Association polls

CHITTAGONG, Feb 12: Advocate Iftekhar Saimul Chowdhury and Advocate Nazim Uddin Chowdhury have been elected president and general secretary respectively of the Chittagong Bar Association.

Advocate Saimul of the Awami League-backed Ainjibi Samannoy Parishad bagged 1,336 votes while his rival Advocate ASM Badrul Anwar of the BNP-Jamaat backed Jatiyatabadi Ainjibi Oikya Parishad got 1,074 votes.

Advocate Nazim received 1,475 votes while his rival Advocate Abu Hanif (independent candidate and incumbent general secretary) got 644 votes.

The BNP-Jamaat-backed Oikya Parishad bagged 12 portfolios out of the total 19 while the Awami League-backed Samannoy Parishad won the rest seven posts.

Other elected executives are senior vice-president Surat Jamal, vice-president Nuruddin Arif Chowdhury, assistant general secretaries Yasin Khokan, Shafiul Haque Chowdhury Selim and Nurul Kabir Erfan, cultural and sports secretary Hasna Hena, information technology secretary Rashedul Azam and 10 members- Md Lokman, Mohammed Ali Yasin, Aquib Chowdhury, HS Sohrawardi, Ezaharul Huq, Enamul Haque, Hasan Kayes of Oikya Parishad and Farhana Rabiul Liza, Selina Akhtar and Yasin Mahmud Tanjil of Samannoy Parishad.

Election Commissioner Advocate Akhtar Kabir Chowdhury announced the results at 12.00 am on Sunday saying that 3, 085 voters cast their votes in the election.
