Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader on Sunday called upon the leaders and workers of his party and its associate bodies to stand beside the flood victims and carry out relief works in the flooded areas, reports BSS.

In a statement, he said the local administration has started distributing relief goods and rehabilitation works in the flood affected areas as per the directives of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

The AL general secretary said the party leaders and worker will stay beside flood victims side by side with the administration.

Quader said central leaders of the party will visit flood affected areas in different parts of the country.

AL sub-committee on relief and social welfare has already taken overall preparations to distribute relief goods in the flooded areas, he added.

The minister said Bangladesh has attained its desired success in disaster management in the last one decade under the dynamic leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

Once Bangladesh was considered as a country of flood, drought and disaster, now it is quite capable of tackling natural disasters, he said.

Later on the day, Obaidul Quader left Dhaka for Singapore for his postoperative health checkup.

"Obaidul Quader left Dhaka for his postoperative health checkup at Mount Elizabeth Hospital in Singapore," said Senior Information Officer of Road Transport and Bridges Ministry Abu Naser.

Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) Director Dr Abu Naser Rizvi and Quader's wife Isratunnesa Quader will accompany him during the visit.

He is expected to return home on July 17.
