A Rangpur court sentenced on Sunday seven members of banned militant outfit Jama'atul Mujahideen Bangladesh(JMB) to death in a case filed for the killing of a Khadem (caretaker) of a shrine in Kaunia Upazila in 2015, reports UNB.
The death awardees are JMB Rangpur region commander Masud Rana, members Isahaq Ali, Liton Mia alias Rafiq, Sarwar Hossain alias Sabu, Bijoy alias Ali, Shakhawat Hossain and Chandu Mia.
Of them, Chandu Mia was tried in absentia. The court also fined them Tk 20,000 each.
The court also acquitted six JMB members--Abu Sayed, Towfiqul Islam, Sadat alias Ratan, Jahangir Hossain alias Rajib, Babul Akhter and Najibul Islam as allegations brought against them could not be proved.
Earlier, on March 5, the court fixed March 18 for delivering the verdict in the case.
According to the prosecution, miscreants hacked and slaughtered Rahmat Ali, khadem of a shrine, to death at Chaitarmore of Tepamadhupur union in the Kaunia upazila when he was returning home from a local bazar on November 10, 2015.
Victim's son Advocate Shafiqul Islam filed a murder case with the Kaunia thana.
After investigation, police pressed charges against 15 JMB members.
.Meanwhile, a Natore court sentenced on Sunday a member of banned militant group Jama'atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) to life- term imprisonment for possessing illegal arms.
The lifer is Russel alias Tamim (33), a resident of Joharpur Bakrir Char in Sadar upazila of the district.
Natore Additional District and Sessions Judge Hasanuzzaman handed down the verdict after examining all records and witnesses, said Assistant Public Prosecutor Abdul Hai.
According to the prosecution, on July 14, 2015, members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested Tamim and Mozmmel from Bonbelghoria area of the district town along with a pistol, several documents of JMB and money.
Later, two cases were filed against them.
Earlier on March 13, the two members of JMB were sentenced to 20 years' imprisonment each in an Anti-terrorism Act case.
