TIB voices concern over 'ghostly cases'

FE Report | October 18, 2018 00:00:00

Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) on Wednesday expressed deep concern over implicating people in 'ghostly cases' by the law enforcing agencies.

The anti-graft watchdog also demanded the law enforcing agencies remain free of political influence in its duty, said a press release of the TIB.

"TIB expresses grave concern over implicating people in 'ghostly cases' without any real basis. Even those who are not found in the scenes of incidents, remain abroad or even are dead are made accused in such cases," TIB states in the release.

Such incidents prove incompetence and negligence of duty on the part of the law enforcers, it said, calling upon the law enforcing agencies to abstain from such ruthless activities.

"According to the news reports of the national dailies, incidents of implicating people in 'ghostly cases' are being noticed and police have made such people accused who were not found in the incident scenes, remained abroad or even died long before," said executive director of TIB Iftekharuzzaman said in the statement.

These activities of a section of police personnel are a matter of concern and do not go with the professionalism of the police department, he added.

"Such incident of falsely implicating people in cases having been influenced by the ruling party is not a new phenomenon. It has unfortunately become a political culture of the country to use government institutions or police to gain political goals," he further said.

The TIB top official demanded that the law enforcing agencies give exact explanations about the 'ghostly cases' to the countrymen so that transparency and accountability can be maintained in this regard.

He also urged the government to take necessary steps to keep sate institutions, including police, out of political influence in order to ensure discipline and rule of law.
