FE Report | September 09, 2019 00:00:00

A writ petition has been filed with the High Court on Sunday challenging the legality of the two circulars by which the government recently appointed 70 deputy attorney generals and 105 assistant attorney generals at the Attorney General Office.

Farhad Uddin Ahmed Bhuiyan, a Supreme Court lawyer, filed the petition. The High Court bench of Justice M Enayetur Rahim and Justice Md Khairul Alam may hear the case, the lawyer said.

The lawyer prayed to the court to issue a rule upon the respondents to show cause as to why the inaction of the respondents to establish an independent prosecution services commission by making new law and the inaction of the respondents to cancel the circulars by which the government recently appointed 70 deputy attorney generals and 105 assistant attorney generals in the Supreme Court should not be declared illegal.

Secretary of the Cabinet Division, secretary of the President's Office, principal secretary of the Prime Minister's Office, secretary of the national parliament, secretaries of the ministries of law, finance, public administration, chairman of the law commission, Attorney General and registrar general of the Supreme Court and others have been made respondents to the writ petition.

The Ministry of Law on July 7, 2019 appointed 105 assistant attorney generals and on July 21, 2019 it appointed 70 deputy attorney generals.
