FE Report
Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) on Tuesday demanded that exemplary punishment be meted out to the ACC and police officials charged with bribery.
The Germany-based anti-graft watchdog came up with the demand through a press release containing a speech of its Executive Director Dr Iftekharuzzaman.
The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) cannot avoid responsibility for the corruption of its officials, he said, adding the investigation into the bribery allegations against them should be completed immediately and exemplary punishment must be awarded to the wrongdoers.
Besides, the police department will have to investigate all the corruption charges against its officials as well, he said.
He also urged both the ACC and police department to conduct proper investigation into the graft allegations to bring back the decaying trust of the people on the two organisations.
Dr Iftekharuzzaman also expressed wonder how a police official could still remain in position despite his public confession of giving bribe to an ACC official.
Deputy Inspector General of Police Mizanur Rahman, who is facing a probe by the Anti-Corruption Commission over allegation of amassing wealth illegally, alleged that enquiry officer of his case ACC director Khandaker Enamul Basir had taken Tk4.0 million as bribe with the false promise of acquitting him of all charges.
DIG Mizanur Rahman also disclosed the records of telephonic conversation between Mr Basir and him regarding the illegal deal.
Mr Basir was suspended by the ACC on Monday.
