Bangladesh seeks int'l community's support for IOM DDG post

Dhaka, May 15 (UNB) - Bangladesh has sought support from the international community for its candidatefor the post of Deputy Director General (DDG) of International Organization for Migration (IOM).
Foreign Secretary Md Shahidul Haque is contesting the election scheduled to be held on June 21 in Geneva, Switzerland for the post.
Ambassador of Bangladesh to Saudi Arabia Golam Moshi, during a recent iftar programme in Riyadh,briefed about the candidature of Foreign Secretary Haque for the post.
Bangladesh Embassy hosted the iftar at Hilton Hotel in Riyadh for Ambassadors and members of diplomatic corps based in Riyadh, said a press release on Wednesday.
Ambassador Moshi requested the invited Ambassadors of various countries based in Riyadh to communicate to their respective headquarters for their support in favour of Shahidul Haque for the post of IOM Deputy Director General.
He said migration is a priority for Bangladesh as more than 10 million migrant workers from Bangladesh are living across the world and contributing to the economy of Bangladesh directly.
The Ambassador also mentioned that Bangladesh has been actively engaged with IOM in all its activities since its membership in 1990; Bangladesh is working with international bodies to ensure safe, orderly and regular migration.
Referring to 1.2 million displaced Rohingya people from Myanmar, he said Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina showed her utmost humanitarian generosity by giving them shelter, food and other necessary supports.
Moshi said Haque has been working as Foreign Secretary since 2013 and his professionalism, efficiency, integrity and wisdom will definitely enrich the IOM.
Haque also served at the IOM in several senior positions from 2011 to 2012, he added.
Thirty-four Ambassadors and other diplomats attended the iftar party.
Consul General of Jeddah Bangladesh Consulate FM Borhan Uddin was also present at the iftar party.
