FE Report | Thursday, 9 November 2017

Japanese Mitsui & Company Ltd and state-run Coal Power Generation Company Ltd (CPGCL) Wednesday signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to implement a 500-600 megawatt (MW) of LNG-based combined cycle power plant (CCPP) at Matarbari of Moheshkhali Island in Cox's Bazar.
A joint venture company with equal (50:50) partnership would be established to implement the project by 2021, a CPGCL official said, after signing of the agreement at CPGCL office housed in Bidyut Bhaban in the city.
Later, top officials of CPGCL and Mitsui met with state minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources (MPEMR) Nasrul Hamid at his Bangladesh Secretariat office. Mr Hamid welcomed the investment plan.
It will be the second MoU between any state-run entity and foreign firms during the last four days to implement liquefied natural gas (LNG) fired power plant in the country.
Earlier on Sunday, Siemens AG, Germany and state-run North-West Power Generation Company Limited (NWPGCL) inked a MoU to implement a 3,600 MW LNG-based CCPP at Payra in the southern region.
The Power Division under the Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources (MPEMR) has planned to implement the projects through negotiation under the 'Speedy Supply of Power and Energy (Special Provision) Act 2010' bypassing the tendering system.
