BD passport up by three notches on Henley Index

Bangladeshi passport's status has moved three notches up to the 97th position on the 2019 Henley Passport Index, although once it was 71st even in 2006.
The index is a ranking of all the world's passports according to the number of destinations their holders can access without a prior visa.
On the newly-unveiled Henley Passport Index, Bangladesh occupies the 97th spot and the passport holders can get access to 42 countries without any prior visa.
Compared to the 100th spot on the 2018 list, when it had access without any prior visa to 41 nations, the latest status reflects a three-spot jump for the green passport.
Over many years the Bangladesh passport even beat neighbouring India. Up to 2009, Bangladesh was ahead of India. From 2010 onwards India is beating Bangladesh in the ranking.
The ranking is based on data from the International Air Transport Association, which maintains the database of travel information, and it is enhanced by extensive, ongoing research by the Henley & Partners Research Department.
Japan holds the top spot on the Henley Passport Index for the second year running, offering citizens visa-free access to a record number of 190 destinations, whereas Singapore continues to hold the 2nd place, along with South Korea, which has moved up from the 3rd place, with citizens able to access 189 destinations.
